Richard then joined Vickers Oceanics Ltd as an engineer operating manned submersibles worldwide before joining Y-ARD as a consultant in Offshore Engineering.

He turned his skills to the offshore industry with British Petroleum in the North Sea and was responsible for the offshore placement of the Beatrice, Clyde, Amethyst and Bruce oil and gas platforms. He returned to Y-ARD, now British Aerospace Marine Systems, as Principal Naval Architect responsible for the naval architects in Glasgow and Bath working on naval, commercial and offshore work.

In 1994, Richard changed direction and has worked as a marine and yacht surveyor inspecting well over 700 yachts and commercial craft.

Richard has sailed since the age of ten years starting in the Cadet class and owning over fifteen dinghies and yachts. He is a Yachtmaster offshore and has cruised and raced extensively, competing in many regattas including crewing the winning yachts in the Scottish Series on several occasions and in the blue water races.

Richard’s formal engineering training, being a Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (MRINA) and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and his wide ranging career as a naval architect in the naval, commercial and offshore fields, when combined with a lifetime of sailing, brings an immense depth of knowledge to his role of surveyor.
